old school motorcycle helmets

Old school motorcycle helmets are a great compromise between full face helmets and riding without a helmet.  Half shell helmets are made by various manufacturers.  It is important to purchase only DOT or Snell certified helmets.  Motorcycle helmets are required as law in most states, however you should check with your specific state for exact regulations.

If you are looking to purchase a helmet, also avoid purchasing used helmets.  Used helmets may have been abused by the previous owner.  Keep in mind that head injuries are extremely dangerous in motorcycle accidents.  Most motorcycle riders know at least one other rider who has been involved in a fatal accident.  It is important to make sure you adequately protect yourself each time you ride, even if it is only for a short distance.

Novelty helmets are not certified and should be avoided. Novelty helmets may look cool but they have not been certified. Without certification, you do not know if the helmet has been made to adequate standards, or “just for looks”.

Make sure that you purchase a colorful helmet so that other riders and drivers can see you.  This can mean the difference between life or death in the event of a motorcycle accident.  If you do fall even slightly, you should make sure you purchase a new helmet.

New helmets will vary in cost, depending on the brand which you choose.  Bell, Arai, Shoei are some of the more prominent helmet makers.  Keep in mind that if you are looking for a bargain, you may want to consider purchasing last years motorcycle helmet model during the fall clearance sale.

If you plan on riding at night, you should also purchase clear goggles to keep debris from your eyes.  Make sure they are adequately vented to prevent fogging.  Purchase your goggles at the same time as you purchase your old school helmet so that they match.

When you are picking your old school helmet, make sure that you choose a helmet which is comfortable for long rides.  The liner can make a very big difference for long rides.  Also choose a helmet which is light as possible without compromising safety.  Lightweight materials can also decrease your fatigue on long motorcycle rides.

If you wish to purchase a motorcycle helmet, you can purchase them online from various retailers.  Keep in mind that you may have to return the helmet if you do not like how it fits.  Be sure to by your helmet from a retailer with an easy no hassle return policy.
