house number plates

House number plates can be updated on your home, to liven up the look of your house from the outside.  There are many different styles of house numbers to choose from, ranging from simple metal plaques to elaborate backlit signs.  Keep in mind that you may also have to refinish the area behind the existing sign after removal, depending on how it was installed.  The sun will usually fade the area around the house numbers.

House number plate regulations

Before you decide to change your house numbers, be sure to check all the rules and regulations.  For example, certain communities (i.e. condominiums with HOA’s) may have requirements that all the house number plaques look the same.  If you live in any sort of gated community, residence with a community association, etc. you will need to first clear any potential legal issues.

House number plaque mounting

Many house number plates can be directly glued, or mounted into the exterior of your home with simple screws and anchors. Keep in mind that once you affix the numbers, it is very difficult to reposition them. Measure the area, and put up a stencil first as a guideline. Once you have a mockup placed on the exterior check and see how it looks from the street. This small step can save a lot of headache later down the line from bad placement of your house numbers.

Modern House Number Signs

If you own a contemporary home, consider using stainless steel house numbers. This can give your exterior a clean polished look, similar to high end office buildings. If you are looking for a contrasting look, slate house numbers can look great on a metal background. Contrasting materials (i.e. matching wood, against metal or slate) can be a great look for modern contemporary homes.

Illuminated house numbers for safety

Illuminated house numbers are a good idea if you live in a neighborhood without any street lights.  This can provide extra safety and visibility to those who are trying to find your house after sunset.   Additional lighting around the exterior of your house can also deter crime and vandalism.

Remodeling the exterior of your house is a great way to increase your curb appeal and the resale value of your home.  If you are on a tight budget, you can also consider landscaping and small low cost improvements such as replacing your house number plates.
