Warehouse racking systems

By

Warehouse racking systems are used to increase the storage density of a facility by taking advantage of the unused vertical space. This is a good alternative to finding a larger warehouse by storing your goods in an elevated location. There are many different types of warehouse shelving units with the most common ones using teardrop shelves. You can usually purchase these as used equipment if you wish to save money vs. the cost of buying new shelving units. Depending on how high you plan on stacking your goods, you may need special material handling equipment to efficiently reach pallets stored off of the ground. In warehouses typically machines used to maneuver goods include counterbalanced forklifts and electric pallet stackers. Some of these machines have articulating forks so that you can double stack pallets without having to have access from an adjacent aisle.

Warehouse shelving can be used in various locations such as order fulfillment warehouses and general merchandise storage. You can often double your storage density with minimal effort with an efficient racking system. When you are evaluating different brands, be sure to choose a system which has universal compatibility. This will make things much easier should you ever need to purchase replacement shelves or support columns. If you plan on using electric forklifts in your warehouse, it is a good idea to install safety barriers at the bottom of the support areas. This can reduce the risks of property damage from electric pallet jacks which may accidentally come into contact with your racking system.

If you plan on installing industrial shelving in your warehouse it is a good idea to map out the potential facility before you decide on purchasing any shelving units. By studying the work flow and traffic patterns in your warehouse you can choose where to place secondary shelving units. In some cases you may even want to consider installing mezzanine storage systems. Mezzanine systems are modular and can add an entire second story floor to your warehouse. These systems usually use a steel mesh floor, and come with various attachments such as stairways, and optional conveyor belt systems.

Industrial shelving units are fairly simple and straightforward to install. The toughest part is picking out the optimal layout for your warehouse. If you plan in advance you can purchase the right parts in a single instance, so that you do not need to later add additional rack units. The actual shelf units can be installed fairly effortlessly. If you are interested in purchasing shelving units you can find them online from such companies as Jarke.
