76Buying used forklift parts can be a great way to keep your equipment in good shape without having to pay full retail prices for new equipment. Another alternative is to purchase refurbished tow motor parts directly from your local dealer. These parts may also come with a warranty/guarantee as well. You can also purchase pallet jack/forklift parts directly over the internet.
Certain parts should never be purchased as used for safety reasons, such as your forklift wheels. It may not be a good idea to purchase used parts such as batteries unless they are fairly new. Parts which make for good suitable used substitutes are parts which do not go through physical wear and tear such as electrical circuit boards.
If your forklift is an older model, you may want to purchase a used non-working forklift truck and use it as a spare parts donor. By purchasing an entire machine, you will pay less for the parts. This is especially true if they are one off parts such as proprietary circuit boards for your Toyota, Yale, Crown, Hyster, Noveltek, etc. This is also a good way to acquire parts if you plan on doing your own work to rebuild the transmission, hydraulic lift unit, etc.
Use caution when working around your forklift batteries. Keep in mind that the charge inside can be lethal, therefore proper training is essential to avoid physical injury while performing your forklift maintenance.
If you do not already keep a log, it is a good idea to keep a separate PM (Preventative maintenance) log for each of your forklifts. Keep information with regards to parts replacement, scheduled service, date of repair, etc. Make sure that you check your fluids on a regular basis. If you have an internal combustion machine, you will also need to check engine fluids such as oil, in addition to hydraulic lift fluid, battery levels, etc.
Upgrading your accessories can be a great way to increase the functionality of your forklift truck, without having to purchase a new model. You can purchase parts and accessories such as man baskets, telescopic forks, rotator attachments depending on the specific needs of your warehouse. If you are not positive, check with your manufacturer’s manual to see what additional accessories may be available for your specific model. You should also keep in mind that attachments will reduce your overall load limit capacity.
