Safety tips for refueling your forklift or electric pallet jack
61Refueling your material handling equipment is an integral part of keeping your machine running smoothly. Keep in mind that your refueling tips and safety procedures will vary based on whether or not you have an internal combustion (ic), lpg, or electric battery forklift/pallet jack truck.
Tips for refueling diesel material handling equipment
- You should never smoke near refueling stations as that can be very dangerous to the open flame from cigarettes.
- Always shut off your forklift motor whenever you are refueling your material handling equipment. This will minimize risks of fires from occurring.
- If fuel has accidentally spilled onto your machine, you need to wait before restarting your gasoline or diesel forklift. Allow for adequate time for the fuel to evaporate from the machine exterior, and/or wipe of the forklift truck.
- Whenever you are refueling LPG trucks, make sure that you check the LPG tank for any signs of physical abuse or damage (dents, large gouges)
- Make sure you are always wearing proper safety gear when you are switching your LPG tanks.
If you are using a battery powered pallet truck or forklift, follow the tips below:
- Never add electrolyte or water to the batter cell unless you have PPE gear, such as goggles, gloves, and a vest.
- Make sure that you keep an eye wash station nearby, so that you can properly be prepared for accidental contact with electrolyte/battery acid
- Check and make sure your vent caps are clear of any debris. It is important that the battery vent plugs are in proper position before you attempt to charge your batteries on your fork truck.
- Keep in mind that forklift batteries generate a lot of heat, and you should allow for 8 hours in order for batters to cool back down.
- Charge electric pallet trucks in well ventilated areas. Hydrogen is combustible.
- The battery cover should also be left open in order for the heat to properly dissipate as well.
