MICR toner cartridges are used by machines to print in magnetic ink.  The toner contains a special ink, which can be read by magnetic heads.  Micr toner cartridges are used by individuals and businesses which print their own checks.  This is an alternative to purchasing pre-printed checks.  You will however, need to purchase special paper known as blank check stock.  This paper is used to prevent check fraud and incorporates security features (such as watermarks to prevent check washing).

It is also a good idea to use a separate printer for the purpose of printing checks.  The ink cost is more greater compared to standard toner cartridges.
