Learn how to drive your car on a race course
65Driving your car on a race track is a great experience. You don’t need an exotic car, to do this. You can drive your own car on a race track, by attending a driver school. There are many benefits to driving on a race track. Race track driving will improve your overall driving skills as you learn how to drive with better skill. The skills you learn can help you in emergency everyday driving as well.
I personally learned how to drive my car at the Watkins Glen track. The experience was fun, and extremely educational.
Make sure your vehicle maintenance has been done.
Talk to a mechanic who is specifically trained race preparation for your car. Race preparation does not necessarily mean upgrading your car to go faster. Race preparation also involves performing proper preventative maintenance, as your car will experience physical stress on the race track. Some of the things which will need to be done include a fresh oil change, brake fluid and pad change as well. A roll cage is not necessary, for the driver school event. You will also need a helmet for the race course.
Find a good driver school.
Driver schools are important, and that is the only way you will be able to drive your car on the race course. If you are the owner of an exotic vehicle, talk to other car owners. Most likely there will be an enthusiast in the group who can help you find the right racing school. Race schools can be found for specific vehicles models (i.e. Ferrari, Porsche, Audi) or they can be generic.
Sign up for the driver school event.
Sign up for the race event, and make sure your car is fully ready mechanically. On the day of your driving school, you will have a classroom session first. Some of the information you will learn in class include proper acceleration and braking. Some of this information is very general, and applies to all cars. You will also be taught how to drive through the curves with the most speed going into the corner, while having the best line to accelerate out.
Prepare for your first track day.
Driving at the track can be an exhilarating, but exhausting experience. The most important thing you can do is learn the track layout. Youtube is a good resource for videos of racing tracks. Some of the videos uploaded include footage from in car cameras. If you mentally drive the track as many times as possible, you will have a much smoother day.
Driving the track in your head means placing your car on the track in your head, and mentally braking & accelerating through. Driving on a race track for the first time can be extremely scary. It will feel like you are learning to drive again for the very first time. Your instructor will be constantly telling you what to do verbally and this can be very nerve racking.
Avoid drinking the night before, and be sure you get to sleep early. You do not want to crash your car during the race school. Keep your ego in check as well. The purpose is to learn how to race, but doing so safely.
Crashing your vehicle can definitely happen, if you are not careful.

I've never driven on a race course before, but it sounds like it would be fun and exhilarating. Thanks for the how-to guide!
