Fullmer makes great looking helmets which are a great blend between old school styling while blending in modern looks.  These helmets generally cannot be purchased over the Internet.  You can call Fullmer at 800-489-2300 if you need to locate a dealer near you.  Fullmer DOT approved half shell lids are made of various materials, including a carbon fiber helmet lineup.  Carbon fiber helmets are extremely lightweight, while providing strong outer shell rigidity.  Keep in mind however that if you are looking for maximum protection you should consider a full faced helmet.

Half shelf helmets are preferred by Harley Riders as they are not as restrictive and allow for greater airflow around your head.  While these are more comfortable, the protection level is not as adequate.  When you purchase a helmet, make sure that it fits properly.  Badly fitting helmets can actually do more harm sometimes during accidents, crashes and falls.  A properly fitted helmet will move no more than 1” while on your head.

Arthur Fullmer Companies, Inc. is a small boutique motorcycle gear company, which was started in 1969.  Fullmer offers some of the best graphic choices (comparable to UK based Davida).  These helmets are made in a variety of colors and print options.  When you are looking to buy a retro helmet, avoid purchasing an all-black half shell helmet whenever possible.  Black retro lids are extremely hard to see in the night time.  Purchasing a colored helmet can dramatically increase the chances of having your motorcycle being spotted by other riders.  If you plan on doing a lot of riding during the night time, you should also purchase a set of clear motorcycle goggles.  Motorcycle goggles are must have accessory if you do not purchase a full face helmet.

DOT vs Snell Helmets

Most riders are taught to purchase helmets which are either Snell or DOT certified. Whenever possible you should always buy a Snell helmet. Snell helmets have better quality control because of strict procedures such as random sampling of production helmets. In order to do this, they actually test helmets which are found on store shelves instead of purely relying on manufacturer samples for quality data. DOT certified helmets are actually not as well regulated. While most people look for DOT helmets, the biggest issue is that DOT certification is actually a self-certification process. What this means is that manufactures can certify their own helmets without going through an independent laboratory which can create potential conflict of interests.

Buying a Fullmer helmet can be a great way to make safe, fashionable styling statement.  If you are looking for retro helmets, you should definetly consider Davida or Fullmer motorcycle helmets.
