Diesel forklift trucks
56Internal combustion forklift trucks offer a much larger lifting capacity compared to electric forklift trucks. These machines use pneumatic tires vs. the polyurethane wheels typically found on electric pallet trucks. Because they use pneumatic tires they can be used over a wider range of terrain compared to electric forklifts which are generally only used for indoor environments.
Diesel forklift trucks are made by companies such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Komatsu, clark, Caterpillar, Yale, and Crown.
Diesel forklift trucks are used for lifting large loads, such as the unloading of containers from ships. These large forklifts have the capability to move around up to 100,000 lbs. These large container handling lift trucks are made by companies such as Taylor (i.e. big red trucks). If you are going to purchase a diesel forklift, be sure you review your requirements to determine if you need to purchase any special forklift attachments. Keep in mind that attachments are needed if you need to perform specialized tasks such as moving around non palletized loads (i.e. you will need forklift clamp attachments), or if you plan on using your forklift as a man lift device. If you are planning on using your forklift as a people mover, be sure you purchase a cherry picker basket. Diesel forklift trucks can be extremely useful, however they can be extremely dangerous as well. Be sure to have your operators review and follow all OSHA training requirements. Forklift accidents such as rollovers can cost millions in damages ranging from destroying machinery, property, inventory, along with potential loss of life.
Many accidents
are cause by accidents which occur when fork lift drivers

Buying diesel forklift trucks
If you are looking to buy a diesel forklift truck, you should explore factory financing options. Most forklift makers (such as Clark, Toyota, Yale) will usually have their own in house financing plans. These lease options typically from from 12 to 60 months in both operating and capital leases. Factory forklift leases can also be subsidized as well by the manufacturer, for low monthly payments. Master lease options are usually available as well. Master lease options are extremely useful if you need a large amount of equipment, with staggered delivery schedules. This option is the best for minimizing the amount of paperwork required for forklift financing.
You can also buy used or refurbished diesel forklift trucks if you are looking to save on the costs of acquiring equipment. You can find used machines certified by the factory, if you are looking for machines which are backed by a factory warranty. If you do not mind foregoing a factory warranty you can also purchased used machines directly from end users or by calling brokers. If you decide to purchase a used machine, be sure to have a 3rd party inspect the machine. This can save you from being surprised with any unknown faults in the forklift. Be sure you also review copies of the service logs as well in order to determine whether or not the previous owner has properly maintained the equipment.
Maintaining diesel forklift trucks
When you purchase your diesel forklift, you should consider purchasing a service maintenance agreement. If you are leasing your machine you can usually build in the maintenance cost into your monthly payments. Outsourcing your PM work is a good idea if you do not have the in-house expertise or resources to perform service work. Proper service work includes fluid maintenance, and regular inspection of critical components. Proper fluid analysis (of oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid) can give of advance warning of any pending mechanical failures as well.
In-house forklift maintenance
You can perform your own forklift maintenance if you have adequately managed internal resources. If you perform your own maintenance you may want to consider sending your mechanics to a factory sponsored training class. These are held by forklift truck manufacturing companies either directly on site or at the factory itself. These training classes are usually held several times per year. You can purchase pallet jack and forklift truck parts online, from various retailers. Certain components are widely available in aftermarket versions such as wheels and tires.
OEM components may be required for certain components such as proprietary circuit boards. If you need to find parts, it is helpful to have a parts number database. This database can be obtained if you send your staff to factory certified training courses. If you do not have access to the master parts database you can also call your dealer with parts assistance as long as you have the model number and serial number information for your forklift.
Forklift training and safety
Forklift training is very important to maximize your chances of having a 100% accident free environment.
If you are lifting large heavy loads with your forklift truck, make sure that you keep the vehicle as low as possible to the ground. Keeping your vehicle will help you maintain your center of gravity. Make sure that you also keep the load directly centered on your forklift truck.
Many forklift accidents occur when ever forklift truck drivers are using their vehicle too fast. As a forklift truck operator, it is very important that you understand the layout of your warehouse. Coming into contact with overhead obstructions such as water pipes can cause serious damage to your warehouse. If you are lifting large objects which dramatically reduce your forward visibility, it is important that you utilize a secondary ground safety spotter. Using a secondary safety spotter can dramatically reduce your chances of being involved in a forklift truck accident.
It is important that you never follow in other forklift truck closer than 20 feet. You need to allow for ample room so that you can perform any necessary last-minute maneuvers in order to avoid forklift truck accidents. Keep in mind that your forklift vehicle needs plenty of space to stop, especially if you are carrying large heavy loads. You need plenty of space so they can slow down your vehicle, before you apply steering wheel input. This is very important because you do not want to upset the balance of your forklift truck load. Many accidents occur when forklift drivers perform abrupt unanticipated movements. According to OSHA reports, for the truck drivers are seriously injured every year because of accidents which involves tailgating forklift trucks. If you follow another forklift truck too closely, you can double your chances of being involved in a collision.
